What about photography? Do we miss “experiencing the moment” while photographing it? I recently read that “Photography is missing the moment but winning eternity.” This reflects the importance we give to memory, which acquires a weight disproportionate to experience, and in doing so, changes experience, reshapes it.
All writing about art is the manipulation of our memory of it – perhaps most writing, regardless of subject, is like that. But some writing seems more ‘fresh’ than others – why? Is it because it is the result of direct experience?
